Assange should not be extradited, says NUJ

7 September 2020

As Julian Assange’s extradition hearings resumes today, the National Union of Journalists in the UK and Ireland (NUJ) has renewed its call for the government to intervene to dismiss the application.

The hearings at the Old Bailey are considering whether the Wikileaks founder should be sent the United States to face 18 charges, most arising from the Espionage Act.

Michelle Stanistreet, NUJ general secretary, said:

"If this extradition is allowed, it will send a clear signal that journalists and publishers are at risk whenever their work discomforts the United States government. Media freedom the world over will take a significant backward step if Assange is forced to face these charges at the behest of a US president.

"The UK government makes much of its commitment to free expression - this case is its opportunity to demonstrate the substance behind those warm words."
