Join the NUJ – how much will it cost?
Staff or Freelance full membership
As of 1 October 2016 the cost of full membership is based on your current annual earnings. There are three grades, listed below.
Grade 1: Members earning up to £20,000 (€24,000) per annum.
Grade 2: Members earning between £20,001 (€24,001) and £29,000 (€36,000) per annum.
Grade 3: Members earning over £29,000 (€36,000) per annum.
As agreed at the Delegate Meeting April 2014 - the contributions rates for full members are:
Minimum membership rate for the one per cent rule is now: £10.00 a month (£120 a year).
Minimum membership rate for the one per cent rule is now: €11.50 a month (€138 a year).
No member should pay more than 1 per cent of their gross taxable income in NUJ contributions subject to a minimum rate of £10 a month (£120 a year)/ €11.50 a month (€138 a year). Any member earning less than £13,600 should only pay the minimum rate.
All temporary freelance members pay an annual membership rate of £60/€69 in the first year, £84/€96.60 in the second year and £102/€117.30 in the third year.
It is now possible to set up a direct debit of £5 a month for temporary membership.(Please note: members paying by direct debit who qualify for a press card will not receive their card until after two months subscriptions have been paid. This is to cover the cost of producing the cards).
Associate members, except for students, pay subscriptions of £60 a year.
Reduced contribution rate
Lower paid members in any sector can avail of the Union’s reduced contribution rate of 1% of their taxable income. This is subject to an absolute minimum of 1/3 of the Grade 1 rate (£60/€69 a year).
Student associate membership is £30 / €34.50 and is for the duration of the course.
On completion of their studies, student members can get a 50 per cent discount on NUJ temporary membership, or a 25 per cent discount in their first year of full membership if they are employed as full-time journalists.
