Freelances have to win and negotiate their own work, but this doesn't come naturally to many journalists.
This one-day online course is for those who have recently gone freelance or want to brush up their skills, will provide ideas and practice on how to win new work and negotiate its terms. It will look at what you need to earn, discuss and practice different ways to pitch ideas, cover how to negotiate on price and produce a good quote. The day will also include exercises on negotiating, advice on ensuring you have an enforcable contract and how to chase late payments.
The course is structured into four hour-long sessions at 10.30, 12.00, 14.00 & 15.30, with breaks between each session. Zoom is left running during the breaks and there will opportunities to ask the tutor further questions.
Tutor: SA Mathieson has worked as a freelance journalist full-time for more than 10 years. He has commissioned freelancers as an editor, including for the Guardian’s Healthcare Professionals section, and has run training courses for the NUJ, the Federation of Entertainment Unions, City Lit and corporate clients.
