The 40th anniversary of the US-backed military coup which overthrew the Chilean government of Salvador Allende on September 11, 1973 will be commemorated by an exhibition of photographs taken in Chile then by NUJ photojournalist member Julio Etchart.
Many of Julio's pictures appeared in publications across the world, alerting readers to the suppression of democracy by General Pinochet and his fellow-conspirators.

The exhibition will run for two weeks at the Amnesty Human Rights Action Centre in Shoreditch, London.
It also includes a very short film of Julio and former Observer Latin America correspondent Hugh O'Shaughnessy – who was one of the very few foreign correspondents in Santiago at the time of the coup – talking about the photos and their memories of Pinochet's Chile.
