Recent legislation gagging civil society groups has only served to amplify the voices of established news organisations and to distort democratic debate. In the wake of the phone-hacking scandal and Leveson inquiry there is still widespread and continuing public concern over the power of the media barons.
Groups such as trade unionists, benefit claimants, immigrants, women and environmental campaigners are routinely misrepresented in the media. We must act urgently to safeguard the right to independent and pluralistic information and to argue that issues concerning media ownership and pluralism be incorporated into party manifestos for the next general election.
A coalition of civil society organisations and professional bodies from throughout Europe have come together with the immediate purpose of running a European Citizens Initiative (ECI) demanding action to ensure media pluralism. The UK Coalition on Media Pluralism aims to open up a serious debate on the need to limit the concentration of media ownership and to increase the range of voices in the local and national media.
Speakers include: Tom Watson MP (Chair), Caroline Lucas MP, John McDonnell MP, Michelle Stanistreet
