Pictures have been put under control of newsdesks as pictures desks are scrapped in some cases but in all cases, companies believe they can simply get freelances for shifts when they like and fill the holes left with UGC.
But the problem the NUJ foresees is that the rates are atrocious for freelances and are not enough to cover the high capital expense involved in investing in modern photographic kit. And when those staff made redundant are faced with buying the kit as a freelancer, they will simply call it a day and leave the industry.
At the same time, there are no new people coming in to the profession with the two NCTJ photography courses at colleges in Sheffield and Bournemouth this year axing their courses due to lack of demand.
The Birmingham and Coventry branch want to explain why this is bad for communities AND business and develop how we can start to persuade employers that quality images are essential to successful media in the longer term.
