This four-stage programme of courses is for branch and chapel reps, either freelance or employed, with members who work in diverse ways. It is relevant for all reps, whether you are new to your role or have more experience. The courses are updated regularly to look at new working practices and laws. They are customised to meet the needs of all NUJ reps and members, regardless of what work you do or how you do it.
This course is aimed at reps and members who have completed stage 1. It further builds on the knowledge and skills needed to support and represent members who have problems or concerns.
- Exploring procedures and policies.
- Understanding procedures in conjunction with codes of practice and guides.
- Knowing the key elements of the Equality Act and health & safety law.
- Developing an understanding of your role when supporting and representing members.

The tutor Caroline Holmes is an NUJ member who has been working in trade union training for over 20 years. She managed and taught on the International Labour and Trade Union Studies degree at Ruskin College in Oxford. As a union rep, her roles have included health and safety, negotiating, organising and recruitment, and organising learning events.
