Welcome to the National Union of Journalists: London Freelance Branch.
Our speaker for May 14th will be renowned whistleblowing journalist & campaigner Eileen Chubb (@CompassnInCare), founder of Compassion in Care.
She said: "I am a former care worker who witnessed defenceless elderly people being abused and blew the whistle. My book Beyond the Façade tells the story of my experience and bears witness for all those I saw suffer." More info here. Eileen will be bringing some of her books to raise funds for the charity.
Journalists get valuable and important information from the brave people who risk their jobs to expose malpractice of all kinds. There have been the recent cases of illicit data-harvesting and attempted election-fixing by Cambridge Analytica, publicised by two former workers at the firm. There were the massive leaks of US security data by Chelsea Manning and Edward Snowden. And here are hundreds more from care homes, the NHS and elsewhere in the public sector, who want the public to know what's going on. The media need this supply of information.
And, following votes last year in the EU Parliament, the Commission on 23 April made proposals for new whistleblower protection laws.
This meeting is for members only however you are welcome to bring a guest (tick the guest option when you sign up). Branch business 7 pm - 8 pm, speakers from 8 pm - 9 pm.
