FOUR POUND FILM CLUB REMEMBERS JOURNALIST VERONICA GUERIN
Media workers are remembering Irish crime reporter and NUJ member Veronica Guerin twenty years after she was killed by drugs lords.
The NUJ Manchester and Salford branch, in collaboration with Three Minute Theatre, is screening the biopic Veronica Guerin, directed by Joel Schumacher.
NUJ Irish secretary Seamus Dooley, who worked with Guerin and was her deputy FoC (shop steward) at the time of her death, is guest speaker at the event.
Guerin, played by Cate Blanchett in the film, had run her own PR company and wrote for the Sunday Independent, Sunday Tribune and Sunday Business Post. She was shot dead as she sat in her car on 26 June 1996. She was reporting on organised crime in Dublin. A year before her death she was shot in the leg at her home but vowed to continue her investigations.
Guerin, a Manchester United fan, has been commemorated in the Christy Moore song Veronica in which she is described as "warrior woman" and there is a monument to her in the grounds of Dublin Castle.
