Let's talk about recruitment.
London independent broadcasting and new media branch is a branch of extremes. Our members work for some of the biggest – ITV, Sky – and the smallest – independent consultants and freelances – companies. We have members in a wide range of website companies, foreign-owned broadcasters and working on the websites of diverse organisations and companies.
We only have one member in many of these workplaces. That might be normal – if there's only one journalist in the company – but more likely there is scope for recruitment. Do you know all of the different kinds of people the NUJ represents? Not just reporters, but also videojournalists, TV producers, website designers, social media officers and PR & communications professionals.
The next meeting of the branch will focus on recruitment and organising. Is there scope in your workplace to recruit more people? What help can the branch and the broader union give you? Would materials – flyers, leaflets, pens, badges, etc – help? Do you have an idea for which you need some money? Have you done some things in your workplace that you think might work well elsewhere?
Come along, share your idea, let's see if we can work together and get out there and recruit some more members to build the NUJ's collective strength.
