Getting Started as a Freelance
Ideal for those just turning freelance, or thinking about it. This one-day training course covers how to find work (including shifts), marketing and promoting yourself, a thumbnail guide to pitching, guidance on finance, tax and national insurance, getting paid, copyright issues and more.
Louise Bolotin is a journalist with more than 35 years’ experience and has been freelance since 2005. She has written for a wide range of newspapers and magazines, worked in BBC local radio and was co-founder of hyperlocal news website Inside the M60 in Manchester. She has a keen interest in the business aspects of freelancing. She is the elected member for the north-west region on the NUJ's Freelance Industrial Council.
Hina Pandya has been a freelance journalist for 8 years. Her experience has come from less traditional routes: in the US as a model maker for Industrial Light and Magic (George Lucas FX house) for special effects on film and commercials, then at ABC News in London before writing policy for UK government departments (DFiD, IPCC). As a freelance, she has written for diverse publications from Chat and It’s Fate to The Times Educational Supplement. She's a pioneering advocate on ways to make journalism pay in the modern world, developing social media strategy, working with authors and writing for and consulting on a relaunch for crowdfunded news journalism at byline.com. Hina founded the NUJ Freelance Salon and runs training for NUJ freelancers for free with Google.
"I felt like I was flying blind before taking your course. After the course, I felt like I knew what I was doing and what to expect, and it massively improved my confidence, so a leap into the unknown no longer seemed like an impossible task. Thank you so much!" Amy Booth, participant on the Getting Started as a Freelance course
Getting started as a freelance and Pitch and deal form part of the NUJ trade union training programme and are therefore discounted. NUJ member: £60; NUJ student member/unemployed member: £50; non-members/GFTU affiliate: £110
