Moving to freelance journalism can be daunting.
This one-day course, aimed at those who are thinking about going freelance or have recently done so, will provide you with practical advice on your first steps as a freelance. Learn what you need to do to get from your first freelance commission to your first payment, along with the first things you need to know about planning, money, tax, legal issues, copyright, licensing, pitching and negotiating.
The course also includes advice on taking care of your health, setting up an office, IT, marketing, pensions – and ideas on how to develop your freelance business once it is up and running. Those attending should bring pen and paper for some of the exercises.
Tutor: SA Mathieson has worked as a freelance journalist full-time for more than 10 years. He has commissioned freelancers as an editor, including of the Guardian’s Healthcare Professionals section, and has run training courses for the NUJ, the Federation of Entertainment Unions, City Lit and corporate clients.
