United We Publish – shape your fate in an age of change: this BookMachine and Unite event on Wednesday 19 July at St Bride Foundation, London from 18.30-21.30 will discuss the future of the book industry, from the rise of Amazon and introduction of e-readers to mass mergers and acquisitions and the rise of self-publishing. The expert speakers have supported workers affected by change and the aim of the evening is to examine how to survive in a industry in a state of flux. Claudia Jones Lecture: the guest speaker for the NUJ's flagship event during Black History Month will be Diane Abbott, the shadow home secretary, on Thursday 26 October from 18.30-20.30 in the Attlee Suite, Portcullis House, Westminster. Put the date in your diary, more details to follow.

Manchester Pride festival 2017: join tens of thousands of people for a weekend of celebration with pride and some of the biggest names in music, starting on Friday 25 August. More details on the NUJ website.


Professional and trade union training

Free workshops: sign on at the Federation of Entertainment Unions training website and as a member of the NUJ you will be able to participate in a range of courses taking place in London, Bristol, Manchester and Birmingham, including: finance for freelances; Instagram for beginners; improving your communication skills; how to run a successful social media campaign; and how to create high quality video on your phone.  More details and how to book on the FEU website.

The dates for free trade union training, including health and safety and employment law updates, in London, Glasgow, Oxford and Manchester can be found on the NUJ website.

NUJ Training Scotland: whether it is social media, filming for i-devices, feature writing and pitching, writing for the web or Adobe Photoshop introduction, there are plenty of training opportunities listed on the Scottish training website including online courses.

NUJ Training Wales: there are courses on mentoring and coaching, filming and editing on an iPhone/iPad, surviving and thriving as a freelance, and strategic communications. NUJ Training Wales also holds special theme-based events, such as Reporting Belief, which brought together journalists and representatives from the spectrum of beliefs in Wales.
