Photographers' Summit 2017: this one-day event for lens-focused members, picture desk staff and anyone who deals with images will take place in London on Saturday 11 February at UCL School of Pharmacy, 29-39 Brunswick Square, London WC1N 1AX. It will bring together industry experts to discuss the future of news, features and PR photography and will provide information on issues such as copyright, privacy and new ways to make money as a press photographer. It includes a competition for NUJ photographers. Full programme and details of the competition to follow.

Local News Matters week: the NUJ is holding a week of action starting on Saturday 1 April to support local news. Events will be held at the UK and Irish parliaments and London Assembly and we will be encouraging all chapels and branches to organise activities in their communities that week. Please put LNM week on your next agenda and if you have any ideas, want to volunteer to take part, or need a speaker to talk about the campaign, email with LNM week in the subject field. Check the NUJ website for further news.

Freelance journalists: this is a reminder to self-employed members to get their tax returns in by 31/01/17 or face an automatic £100 fine. More details on the LFB website. The NUJ has responded to the HMRC consultation Making Tax Digital which will affect all self-employed workers. A copy of the submission is on the NUJ website.

As a member of the NUJ you are eligible for these two free Federation of Entertainment Unions workshops: Using data to make more money from freelancing on Thursday 1 December in London, will show you how to use data to run a more productive and profitable freelance business. Finance for Freelances on Tuesday 6 December in London, will help you improve your financial management, from how to work out your tax to cash-flow forecasting. Details of all free workshops are on the FEU website.

Save BBC Radio

The NUJ held a packed meeting in Parliament with Bob Shennan, director of BBC Radio, when he was told the plans to outsource 60 per cent of radio production were "too fast, too large, too extreme, too reckless". But, we must pile on the pressure. Contact your MP and ask him/her to sign Early day motion 551 and to contact Tony Hall, BBC director general, and Karen Bradley, Culture Secretary, to tell them privatisation of BBC radio will damage the service. You can download and send them the NUJ briefing. You can contact your MP via the Write to Them website. Invite a local BBC radio rep to your next branch or chapel meeting, email if you need help with making contact.

UN Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls

The NUJ is campaigning for an International Labour Organisation convention to stop gender-based violence at work. Read the report on the NUJ website and tweet your support for today's UN Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls. Perhaps you could make it an item on your branch or chapel agenda, email if you need a speaker.
