The National Union of Journalists, the Bar Council and the Law Society have organised a meeting to discuss the Investigatory Powers Bill on Monday 11 April starting at 17:00 in the House of Commons committee room 11. On Wednesday 6 April, the UK is raising its pay threshold for non-EU skilled workers, meaning they will be deported if they do not earn at least £35,000. This could affect some of our members. This will be marked on the day by a party/demonstration at the Red Lion pub in Westmister. Details on the Facebook page.

May Day: assemble at noon at Clerkenwell Green, London EC1, on Sunday 1 May for the march to a rally at Trafalgar Square at 14:30. Speakers include Jeremy Corbyn, John McDonnell and Frances O'Grady.

Freelance Salon Manchester: this NUJ forum on Wednesday 18 May will discuss ways to make journalism pay in new ways, featuring speakers who have done something a bit different and made it work.


Save the BBC

The Federation of Entertainment Unions has launched its Alternative BBC White Paper. You can download it or ask for copies at campaigns@nuj.org.uk

Keep the BBC independent: John Whittingdale, the culture secretary, says he wants government appointees to run the corporation. Sign the 38 Degrees petition calling for the BBC to stop him.

Training in Wales
: the NUJ offers a programme of subsidised, practical courses in new media and core journalism skills, including shooting film and editing on your iPhone and strategic communications.

Free workshops: as an NUJ member you are eligible for courses provided by the Federation of Entertainment Unions, including Finance for Freelances, Friday 22 April in Brighton.
