Fighting for fair wages: the NUJ's Pay Day event on Saturday 31 October in London will bring together speakers from the NUJ, Guardian, Financial Times, regional press and from across all media sectors to discuss how to negotiate and campaign for better wages and fair working practices for staff and freelances. All members are welcome to come along, have their say and share their experiences.  We are encouraging all branches to send a representative. More details and how to register on the NUJ website.

Claudia Jones: Clive Lewis MP will be the keynote speaker at a special event for Black History month in honour of activist and journalist Claudia Jones on Tuesday 27 October at Kings Place, London. More details and the booking form on the NUJ events page.

Royal reporter or health corr?: this free NUJ event, on Thursday 29 October, brings together experts in their field from national papers and the BBC. They will give an insight into what it is like to be a specialist reporter and share some of the secrets of the trade. List of speakers and booking details on the NUJ website.

Jonathon Porritt delivers the Benn Lecture on Thursday 29 October, organised by the Bristol National Union of Journalists and the Cabot Institute. The event is free, but you must reserve a place on the Bristol Festival of Ideas website

Defend the right to strike
: come to the Trade Union Coordinating Group's demo and meeting at Parliament on Tuesday 13 October. At 17.00 assemble for the demo at Old Palace Yard. The rally starts at 18.00 in Committee Room 10 to discuss the fight against the government's trade union bill. Michelle Stanistreet will be among the speakers who include Mark Serwotka (PCS), Matt Wrack (FBU) and MPs John McDonnell, Ian Lavery, Caroline Lucas and Hannah Bardell.

Who will pay for Welsh journalism?  This one-day conference held by the NUJ and the University of South Wales’s Centre for the Study of Media and Culture in Small Nations, in Cardiff on Saturday 7 November, will review the Welsh news media landscape. How can we create media democracy? the NUJ's general secretary, Michelle Stanistreet will  join a range of industry luminaries at the Media Reform Coalition's media democracy day in London on Saturday 17 October. More details on the MRC website


NUJ vacancy

The National Union of Journalists is seeking a freelance digital journalism liaison officer for a one-year funded position. Reporting to the Scottish organiser and NUJ training manager, based within the NUJ’s Scottish office in Glasgow, the digital journalism liaison officer will be responsible for the Modern Apprenticeship pathway in the Digital Journalism project. Opportunity

Careers in digital journalism: the BBC Academy is holding an event on Thursday 15 October for early-career job seekers and those making the transition to digital newsrooms. It will focus on the practical information needed to look for jobs in today’s newsrooms, the digital skills and will offer an overview of the digital news landscape in the UK.

Paul Robinson bursary: BBC Northern Ireland and the Belfast and district branch of the NUJ, in association with local charity Northern Ireland Chest, Heart and Stroke, have created a joint bursary in memory of award–winning BBC NI journalist, Paul Robinson, who died in 2009. The bursary includes an award of £1,000 and a short placement opportunity with the BBC. Deadline for entries, 16.00 Thursday 21 January.
