Love it or Lose it: the government's green paper on the BBC makes plain its intention is to cut the broadcaster down to set of core services. The NUJ and Federation of Entertainment Union's #LoveitorLoseit campaign will fight to defend the BBC and its role to inform, educate and entertain. Local News Matters: London members working for Newsquest titles have now agreed a deal, but the newspaper group has announced further job cuts in Oxford and Bournemouth. LNM news on the NUJ website. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport has launched consultation on the case for business rates relief on local newspapers.The NUJ will be responding and would like to hear your views, please email campaigns@nuj.org.uk

Trade union rights: this was the response from the Trade Union Co-ordinating Group to the government's Trade Union Bill which aims to destroy the trade union movement. Sign the 38Degrees Defend the Right to Strike petition.


Awards

Amnesty Media Awards: enter the awards which celebrate the best in human rights journalism. Entries include print and broadcast journalism, photographic and digital content, local, national and international reporting, plus the Gaby Rado award for best new journalist. Jacobs science writer fellowship: the Klaus J. Jacobs research prize rewards high quality scientific work relevant to the study of personality development in children and young people. This new fellowship will bring five science or health policy journalists from the US and UK to Zurich to work with premier Swiss research institutions. The application deadline is Saturday 15 August. You can apply on the foundation's website.


Research

Journalists in Ireland: Brian Furey is writing a thesis which will examine the social media habits of journalists working in Ireland as part of his MA in social media studies at Dublin City University. If you are an Irish member, please help him by completing this survey.


Training

This autumn the NUJ offers a programme of courses to enhance your skills and aid your career. These include learning how to: build your own website; an introduction to feature writing; Teeline shorthand; boost your income and job security; add PR to your portfolio; get started in InDesign; get started as a freelance and an introduction to online journalism.  Find out more on the NUJ website.

Training in Wales: the NUJ offers a programme of subsidised, practical courses in new media and core journalism skills, including how to build a website, how to run a campaign using social media and media law refresher sessions. More details on NUJ Training Wales.

Support
