Branch campaign secures extra pay for NUJ members

The NUJ has won promotions and pay increases for six of its members at the BBC who have spent years being underpaid for their work.

In some cases people were working in more senior roles for more than a decade without getting the pay or promotion they deserve.

The union’s BBC London branch is now looking to take up more cases and establish rules to ensure that other people don’t lose out in the same way.

A survey by the branch last year revealed that many journalists at the corporation have been acting up to more senior roles for long periods without a pay increase in recognition of the additional duties.

An initial list of the 10 worst cases were presented by NUJ reps to BBC management.

Six of the people concerned have now been formally appointed to jobs on grades that reflect the work they are doing, with more cases still being considered.

The union is calling on BBC management to immediately offer substantive posts to anyone who has been acting up to a more senior role for four years or more.

It is also calling for a proper policy to be put in place to ensure that staff in these circumstances are treated fairly.

Anna Mainwaring, NUJ Mother of Chapel at BBC TV News said: “We wanted to start by resolving some of the most scandalous cases, and this is an excellent start to our campaign.

“However, there are many more cases to address, and many of those members affected may still face a battle to get the pay they have missed out on over the years.

“People are putting in the extra effort for the BBC, it’s only fair for their efforts to be recognised.”

NUJ Broadcasting Organiser, Sue Harris, thanked the people involved for all their work: “The continuing persistence of Anna and our other reps at the BBC has finally made headway on these cases and I know they will keep on battling for other journalists who are in the same boat.

“It shouldn’t be such hard work to ensure people are paid the right rate for the job they’re doing.”
