NUJ backs European 'Stand up for Journalism Day'

Wednesday 5 November was the European Federation of Journalists’ Stand Up for Journalism Day.

It’s a day to remind people why journalism matters.

As news organisations look to make cutbacks across all sectors of the industry, our members have less time to do their jobs well. That has a big impact on quality journalism.

As well as getting behind specific union campaigns through your NUJ chapel or branch, why not take a look at some of our stories and actions that are all about standing up for journalism.

What you can do:

ITV News: Stand up for ITV News and tell us why you value your local ITV news programme. As the company looks to shed 429 editorial jobs and cut hours of output, we want to know why you you think local and regional news is important. You can also help stand up to the cuts at ITV by signing our petition and joining the Facebook group.

UTV: If you’re in Northern Ireland, write to your MLA to protest about planned cuts by UTV.

Overwork: Across the media, massive cuts are putting journalists under more stress than ever. This week journalists in Newsquest are completing our stress survey. Find out how we’ve been using this technique to stand up for journalism in Scottish workplaces or get more information on our Stressed Out campaign pages.

Worldwide: Find out what our colleagues in other countries are doing for the day on the website of the International Federation of Journalists.
