Newsquest cuts will damage Northern Echo
Newsquest is set to continue its assault on quality journalism by announcing further cuts to staffing in Northern England.
The Newsquest-owned Northern Echo plans to cut 18 staff and reduce the paper to one edition.
The paper’s last deadline is expected to move from 1.30pm to 10.30am meaning that journalists will miss any big news stories which emerge throughout the morning.
NUJ Northern Organiser, Chris Morley, said: “As far as the chapel is concerned it’s going to the heart of what they do as a major regional newspaper. It will be far less flexible with these redundancies and earlier print deadlines.
“Newsquest seems intent on a mission to put profits ahead of investment in quality journalism.”
Drivers and production staff in Yorkshire, where the Northern Echo is printed, will be most affected, although a vacant editorial post will not be filled.
