More anger at York Press as job cuts are announced

NUJ members at Newsquest York suffered a further shock this week when they attended talks with ACAS on Tuesday (17/6) to settle an ongoing pay dispute.

Managing Director, Steve Hughes, choose the morning of the talks to announce that eight jobs would be axed in the editorial departments of the York Press and Gazette and Herald.

The editorial staff of 58 will be cut by eight and a current vacancy will not be filled. Cuts are also expected across other departments at the newspapers.

NUJ joint Father of Chapel at Newsquest York, Sam Southgate, said: "We are ready to oppose any compulsory redundancies planned in these cuts. Management has stated that they are re-structuring the papers but has not given us any details of the plans and this is making the consultation a sham.

"We will continue to talk with management about the pay dispute but will not be co-operating with any any consultation over planned redundancies until they provide us with proper re-structuring plans."

The chapel is set to meet with bosses next Wednesday for a second day of talks over the current pay dispute which has already led to a five-day strike and mandatory chapel meetings.
