The NUJ is continuing its union-wide Journalism Matters campaign to promote the central role of quality content across all media and its vital role in our democracy. Savage cutbacks across most sectors – newspapers, broadcasting, books and magazines - are seriously threatening quality and damaging our profession.
This campaign aims to unite the work of the union under one banner.
Quality journalism matters to everyone, not just those working in the industry. The media plays a vital role in society – providing citizens with the information necessary on which to make a range of decisions. From local newspapers to specialist magazines, from websites to radio and TV, staffing and budget cuts are undermining that crucial role. Without proper investment into journalism, quality journalism will be a thing of the past.
Stand Up for Journalism
The highly successful Stand Up for Journalism day of action in 2007 developed from the Journalism Matters idea into an occaision for members to stand up and raise their workplace issues. The day was a huge success with events taking place across the union involving hundreds of members. Stand Up for Journalism will continue as part of the Journalism Matters campaign.
The distinction for Stand Up for Journalism will be events or specific action by members. It is internal facing for strikes and other industrial action undertaken by members, standing up for what they believe in. Journalism Matters is about taking these messages out to the public, parliament and all stakeholders to warn them of the effects of these issues.
The reason we fight for better pay and conditions; the reason we wont disclose confidential sources; the reason we fight cut-backs; the reason we demand fair pensions and the reason we demand equality is because Journalism Matters.
