Equality Council

The council is the NUJ’s forum for all matters relating to - equal pay, lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender (LGBT) rights, age diversity, work/life balance and childcare/dependant care.

Recent years have seen equality take centre stage in the Government’s legislative programme. The Equality Council monitors the progress of relevant legislation and campaigns for improvements.

The council works to promote equality within the NUJ. The council opposes and publicises all forms of discrimination. It encourages the formation of pro-equality groups and liaises with the union’s branch and chapel equality officers and seeks to ensure that equality is incorporated into the mainstream bargaining agenda.

Seven members of the council are elected annually at the Annual Delegate Meeting (ADM) via nominations from NUJ branches. Representatives from each NUJ Industrial Council Equality Seat also sit on the council, plus one representative from the Scottish Executive Council (SEC) and the Irish Executive Council (IEC).
