End low pay

In order to protect their profits media companies all too often try to hold down wages. The NUJ campaigns for professional pay for journalists, organising protests, negotiating for fair pay and acting to improve terms and conditions.

Recent surveys have shown that:
  • Nearly half of all journalists earn less than the average wage in the UK. 75% of journalists earn less than the average wage of a professional worker
  • 80% can’t afford the average house mortgage
  • Journalists’ starting rates are at least £7,000 less than the median starting salary for graduates

Yet surveys also show that pay in unionised workplaces is 8% higher than in non-unionised ones. Our campaign message is simple – get unionised, get organised, get active, get your fair share…
