Leading sports journalist Eddie Giles dies
Leading sports journalist Eddie Giles, who died at Christmas just before his 85th birthday, wrote several books on Bristol Rovers and Bristol City.
An NUJ life member, he had joined the Bristol Evening Post in 1956, and worked as deputy sports editor and chief sports sub-editor. He later worked with the Daily Telegraph where he retired as northern sports editor in 1993.
After retirement, Eddie drew on his experience of covering sport in Bristol to produce Bristol Rovers: The Bert Tann Era, published in 2007, which told the story of the manager who guided Rovers through one of their most successful periods from 1950 to 1968.
Last year a second book, Bristol City: From Atyeo to Dicks, included the story of City's record goalscorer and the financial crisis which almost finished the club.
He also wrote several books on Derby County, Nottingham Forest and Notts County.
He died at his home in Essex and is survived by his wife, Joan, two children and four grandchildren.
