Life member Keith Newton dies

Life member Keith Newton, who has died of cancer aged 67, had been a leading journalist at the Middlesborough Evening Gazette  from the 1960s until his retirement in 2009, with stints in the Thomson Newspapers London office and at the Daily Express in Manchester thrown in.

A long-standing Labour Party member, Keith met his wife Lyn (later a head teacher) when she worked at the Teesside Star and he signed her up as an NUJ member.

A leading writer on the arts, he was entertainment editor at the Evening Gazette for a quarter of a century. Five years ago, as he began his battle with bowel cancer, he wrote about it in a bid to raise awareness of the disease.

Keith Newton is survived by his wife Lyn, daughter Louise and son Tim, and five grandchildren.
