Women in the media - NUJ events in June
The NUJ will be holding its biennial women’s conference on Saturday 23 June commencing at 11am in Headland House, London.
Following on from our successful International Women’s Day meeting on sexism in the media entitled '
Where are all the women?', we intend to look at sexism in media workplaces so we will be covering the gender pay gap, discrimination against older women, particularly in broadcasting, maternity and flexible working issues, discrimination in redundancy situations, sexual harassment, glass ceilings, online attacks on freelance female bloggers - the list is endless but we will try to fit as much in on the day as we can!
This year we will also be holding women’s training on the Friday before the conference. The training event will start at 2pm on the 22 June and will also be held at Headland House. The training will go on until approximately 6.30pm and it is envisaged that the women attending from outside London will stay over to attend the conference the next day and that all women attending the training, as far as possible, will be delegates to the conference.
Places on the training course will be limited as we can only train around 20-25 women, so places will be allocated on a first come basis. It is intended that the training will be for women members who want to learn more about the NUJ and who are reasonably new to activity. The conference is, of course, open to all women members and we are hoping that all branches will send and sponsor at least one woman to attend.
We are asking NUJ branches to encourage women members to attend and sponsor their own members and help towards the costs of those from branches with limited resources - this is particularly the case for smaller, outside London branches.
Registration for the training and conference and pledges of financial support should be sent to Lena Calvert at

Please email Lena for more information and to register for the events.
Further details of speakers and the agenda will be advertised soon.
