NUJ supports equal rights on international day against homophobia
The NUJ is proud to support the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia and to use the occasion to remember all the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people (LGBT) who have been attacked or killed in this country and around the world.
People are still murdered simply because of their sexuality and homosexuality is still illegal in at least 80 countries around the world and in seven countries women, men and children are punished for their sexuality with death sentences.
Michelle Stanistreet, NUJ general secretary said “LGBT people in the UK now have equal rights under the law but still face hostility from some sections of society and across the world people are dying simply because of their sexuality. The NUJ stands up for equal rights for LGBT people every day of the year but it is important to have a day when we all remember those who have faced intimidation, violence and death and campaign for this to stop.”
The NUJ has a website for LGBT NUJ members – www.nujpride.org.uk and the union’s code of conduct requires members not to produce material that may lead to discrimination against people because of their sexual orientation.
