Code Of Conduct
The revised NUJ code includes a new 'conscience clause', which declares that journalists are entitled to refuse to produce work in breach of the code and will be given the support of the union if they do so.
The union has always stood for high journalistic standards based on the Code and the union has always backed members willing to take a stand for ethical journalism.
Ethical assistance from the NUJ
NUJ members can call the NUJ Ethics Hotline on 0845 450 0864 when they want advice or support.
The Ethics Hotline is staffed by Ethics Council members who have years of journalistic experience. The chair of the Ethics Council is Chris Frost - a former President of the NUJ and member of the national executive. Chris is also a professor of Journalism at Liverpool John Moores University. He says: “The hotline is not there to preach, but to discuss issues of professional standards between colleagues. It allows members to seek a second opinion from an experienced, knowledgeable member.”
