Newspapers and Agencies

If you work for a newspaper or news agency the NUJ is the union for you. Our members work across the whole sector - from the smallest weeklies to the national dailies.

Whether you are on the staff or freelance, a feature writer or reporter, an editor, sub-editor, photographer, illustrator or in any other editorial role you are welcome in the NUJ.

Low pay is one of the key issues for journalists working across the newspaper industry - particularly in local newspapers where some start on as little as £12,000 a year. Some senior reporters earn less than a trainee manager at McDonalds. We are campaigning hard to change it. For more information on our current campaigns to end low pay click here.

More and more journalists are also forced to work long hours - sometimes as many as 50 or 60 a week – and some are forced to sign away their rights under the Working Time Regulations. The NUJ is campaigning to get the law changed so that this is not possible.

The NUJ is also at the forefront of campaigns to defend quality. Click here for details of other current NUJ campaigns

At any one time your union could be winning a pay rise for staff in one workplace, defending an individual against bullying in another and taking industrial action over unfair shift patterns in another. Active NUJ members are negotiating, bargaining and campaigning for improvements in journalists’ pay and conditions.
