Zimbabwe Action

The NUJ has embarked on a major project with our sister union in Zimbabwe.

Over the last few years, times have been tough for the country’s journalists and trade unionists.

We’re now working with the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists to identify ways in which the NUJ can help make the union more effective in supporting its members.

Funding from the British Trades Union Congress has enabled the NUJ to establish links with the ZUJ and develop plans for a long-term project in support of the union.

We’re looking at how we can help to:
  • Build the capacity of the ZUJ as a trade union. Our Zimbabwean colleagues are keen to learn from the NUJ’s own experiences in building and organising a union;
  • Provide assistance with training. Political turmoil and the flight of many experienced journalists abroad means that many journalists are asking for support in understanding professional, ethical and trade union issues
  • Develop greater equality within newsrooms and ZUJ structures. The project will put a particular focus on bringing more women into senior positions in the union and fighting the discrimination they experience at work.
  • Establish resource centres to support ZUJ members. The cost of accessing the web puts it out of the reach of many journalists, so we’re helping kit out resource centres to give Zimbabwean journalists access to computers and the internet.

If successful, our work could result in access to a significant level of funding for a long-term project from the UK’s Department for International Development.
