NUJ in Parliament

The NUJ uses its collective strength to speak out for journalists and journalism in the UK and Irish Parliaments and devolved Parliaments and Assemblies in Scotland Wales and Northern Ireland as well as lobbying at an EU level to improve conditions for journalists.

The NUJ's strong voice helps ensure issues of importance to journalists are heard where it really counts. For details. For details of our latest campaigns click here.

The NUJ Parliamentary Group in the House of Commons acts as a working group facilitating the NUJ’s lobbying, liaison and campaigning. The group is made up of around 25 MPs. As the NUJ is not affiliated to any political party the group comprises MPs from all the main parties.

The group actively challenges censorship and campaigns for limits on the concentration of media; supports public service broadcasting; and campaigns for an end to the long-hours culture and low pay.

The union’s parliamentary officer, based in the Houses of Parliament, co-ordinates the NUJ’s Parliamentary strategy: monitoring legislation; tabling amendments; proposing parliamentary questions and Early Day Motions (EDM); and lobbying for support.
