Newcastle votes to fight compulsory redundancies

Journalists in Newcastle have voted ninety percent in favour of industrial action in a secret ballot over job cuts.

The NUJ members – who work for the Chronicle, Journal, Sunday Sun and associated Trinity Mirror weekly titles – are determined to stop compulsory redundancies.

Management want 23 posts to go – along with the closure of offices in North Shields and Durham.

NUJ Northern Regional Organiser Chris Morley said: “The chapel are willing to talk about restructuring but do not want anyone to be forced out of a job.

“This ballot demonstrates the strength of feeling and gives us a mandate for action if anyone is threatened with compulsory redundancy.”

The ballot – carried out independently – showed 85 percent in favour of strike action, and 90 per cent for action short of a strike.

The NUJ chapel meets again on Tuesday.
