Appeals Tribunal

The Appeals Tribunal acts as a final court of appeal on complaints against members under NUJ rules and arbitrates in disputes between members and the Electoral Presiding Officer over the issuing of ballot papers and the conduct of elections. The tribunal also hear appeals from complainants who believe that the penalty on the person or persons complained against is too lenient.

Journalist editorial advisory board

The Journalist Editorial Advisory Board has seven members who are nominated by branches and elected by delegates at delegate meetings.

The primary function of the board is to protect and promote the editorial independence of The Journalist and its Editor.

The Board is not there to instruct the Editor and its members have no right of access to copy prior to publication, unless the Editor requests their assistance.

The board can, however, supply editorial comment for publication as requested by the Editor.

The Board can act as a dialogue between members and the Editor, encouraging branches, chapels and members to keep The Journalist aware of professional issues that could be considered for coverage.

This exchange will help inform the strategic agenda for the magazine and the development of material under the Editor's control, to the benefit of the union and its membership.

The board can further advise on:

  • relevant budgetary and commercial matters
  • matters of complaint about content, supplying guidance to both the editor and the members

The Board asks that in the first instance any complaints or suggestions about the magazine should be made to the Editor.  Alternatively, a letter for publication in The Journalist can be submitted to the Editor.  If the matter remains unresolved then the complaint may be sent to the Board.

The Board meets three times a year and reports to each NUJ delegate meeting.
