NUJ for students
The NUJ is an active, campaigning organisation seeking to improve the pay and conditions of our members and working to protect and promote media freedom, professionalism and ethical standards in all media.
Our student membership gives student journalists the chance to be part of the union, which has 38,000 members working across the industry as staffers and freelances in a range of sectors.
The NUJ is the voice for journalists and takes student journalists’ issues seriously. For example, we were the first organisation to work with journalism students to produce best practice guidelines for work experience, covering how people should be treated whilst on work placements.
If you’re a student journalist, here are a few reasons why you should join the NUJ:
- You get a student press card – identifying you as a bona fide student journalist
- You get access to discounted training – up to 75 per cent discount on the NUJ’s professional training. This discount applies for the first year after you complete your studies
- You become part a leading campaigning organisation fighting for a free press and investment in quality journalism
- You become a member of your local NUJ branch – where you can meet journalists working in your area
- You qualify for discounted full NUJ membership – become a full member of the union within a year of finishing your course and get a 25 per cent discount on your fees for the first year of membership.

Student membership costs a one-off fee of £25.00/€35.70. This provides membership for the duration of your journalism course.
