Chapel in Wales for Swansea students
Student journalists in Wales are flocking to the NUJ banner, with plans to set up a union chapel at Swansea University.
The move follows a meeting attended by 25 contributors to the university magazine Waterfront. They were all anxious to join the NUJ under its
special student membership arrangements. The editor of Waterfront is to join the NUJ as a full member.
Students were welcome participants at last November’s NUJ delegate meeting in Southport. The NUJ is the voice for journalists and takes student journalists’ issues seriously. For example, the union was the first organisation to work with journalism students to produce
best practice guidelines for work experience , covering how people should be treated on work placements. There are many reasons for students to join the NUJ:
- You get a student press card - identifying you as a bona fide student journalist
- You get access to discounted training - up to 75 per cent discount on the NUJ’s professional training. This discount applies for the first year after you complete your studies
- You become part a leading campaigning organisation fighting for a free press and investment in quality journalism
- You become a member of your local NUJ branch - where you can meet journalists working in your area
- You qualify for discounted full NUJ membership - become a full member of the union within a year of finishing your course and get a 25 per cent discount on your fees for the first year of membership.
